Installation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems on the vessel Al Utouriya project

With IMO deadline for implementation of regulation governing treatment of ballast water fast approaching, installation of Ballast Water Treatment Systems together with interconnecting pipework and related electrical machinery will be a major task for all ship repairers. Conducting this operation while vessels are afloat, posts a real challenge to ship repair organizations engaged in such work on both quality and safety aspects. Nico international was engaged by vessel owners of Al Utouriya on time bound installation of one such system supplied by Ocean Saver who are market leaders in BWT systems while the vessel was in UAE waters.

Scope of work performed by Nico included installation of ballast water treatment system complete with interconnecting piping systems, outfitting & panelling of main filters and heating units, electrical interface of the system, pre-fabricating large size suction and discharge lines on the ballast system & install in the engine room. Since the work was performed in engine room, steering gear  & poop deck areas, our work scope also included supporting rigging & scaffolding work to execute above work in restricted & confined space.

Vessel being an LNG carrier, continuous interface with DMCA HSE personnel, vessel crew and NICO HSE ensured comprehensive risk management and control. Despite challenging environment our afloat repair team together with support of our specialized workshop and QHSE planned the job scope in a time bound manner including sub-contracting of the fabrication of GRP piping. Being the most critical milestone on the planning sheet, specific details of the fabrication were monitored to ensure timely completion and with no quality issues. Interface with ship classification society  on various aspects of job scope covering a comprehensive inspection test plan, material certification, in process inspection, NDT & final certification on board resulted in a smooth transition of the final acceptance of the job scope by class and customer. The entire job scope was completed with zero repair and rework.

The installation of Ballast Water Treatment System on board Al Utouriya has provided Nico International latitude to be front runner to support technological upgrades on BWT Systems by Ocean Saver and other manufacturers on their current and future projects.
