NICO builds on one-stop-shop philosophy

Dubai-headquartered NICO International prides itself on being a one-stop-shop for customers in the region, and has built up close relations with several key customers

Over the past year, NICO has enjoyed considerable success, buoyed by continued support from key clients such as Maersk Line, Anglo Eastern Ship Management, Topaz Energy & Marine, Dubai Dry Docks, DUGAS, Alstom, Red Sea Marine, APL, MISC Bernard and Van Oord, among others. Notable projects undertaken in 2016 include the conversion of a vessel for Muttawa Marine, including modifications to the forecastle deck, wheel house and main deck, and economizer retubing on four vessels for ADNATCO – NGSCO.

Dry-docking work has also continued at a high level. Key repeat clients, such as the UAE Coast Guard, Muttawa Marine, Gulf Piping Company, Briese Schiffahrt, Khalid Faraj, Red Sea Marine and National Ferries, were served by NICO during dry-dock periods in 2016. Moreover, the company says it has a full order book up to the middle of 2017, with an increase in the docking of smaller vessels, a notable trend for the year so far. NICO carried out 18 regular dry docking jobs in 2016 and says it is on track to double this number in 2017.

The company has also seen a healthy jump in business for its underwater services and anticipates continued growth in that segment. NICO International’s diving team has successfully carried out the recovery of various lost anchors at Fujairah Anchorage. To date, the company claims to have a 100% success rate for recovering lost anchors at Fujairah Anchorage.

NICO International’s Diving Division was recently audited by Teekay, who visited its diving division base located at Fujairah Port, and undertook a due diligence audit of the Safety Management System. NICO International was described by Teekay inspectors as being a “Transparent and proactive company operating to a high standard in safety." The company has also received official approval from Shell International, as an Inshore Diving Contractor within the UAE.

The size of the NICO diving team has recently been increased to accommodate the growing number of enquiries from its customers. All of NICO’s divers are sent for ‘First Aid & CPR’ & ‘Emergency Oxygen provider’ training, along with internal safety programs upon joining and before going on-site, the company points out.

Over the past 18 months, NICO has extended its capabilities, having entered into a long term collaboration agreement with Global Boiler, a well-known Danish boiler company. The aim of this alliance is to further strengthen the capabilities of NICO in the field of marine and industrial boiler servicing in the Middle East region. NICO also has entered into an exclusive sales and service agreement with Veth Propulsion for the latter's range of propellers in the GCC region

A NICO spokesperson says, "Our commitment to continued investment in infrastructure development and equipment, enables us remain ahead of growing market needs, and has given us an enviable reputation in the ship repair sector. Our strategic position with facilities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, means we stand to benefit from the industry's résurgence in this part of the world. NICO's capabilities and expertise are high in demand and our strong brand and reputation as a quality provider are integral to future growth prospects."
